They die because you potted them in whatever bag of "soil" was closest to the checkout counter at the hardware store, priced at $4.99, labeled with a suspiciously happy cartoon fern, and containing approximately zero thought about what your plant actually needed to survive. We can all breathe a sigh of relief that this is, in fact, fixable. Phew. And then we can all immediately go fetal with the realization that we've probably been doing this wrong for years.
I know what you're gonna ask. Is soil really that big of a deal? Like, dirt is dirt, right? Confusingly, the soil also needs to hold some water — just not all of it, all the time. This is the job of peat moss, coco coir, or compost. The goal is a mix that drains fast but doesn't dry out in six hours flat.
3. Aeration
Roots breathe. I know that sounds like something you'd read on a candle label, but it's true — roots need oxygen, and compacted soil chokes them out. Bark chips, perlite, and vermiculite all help keep the structure loose and airy.
A solid all-purpose indoor mix is usually some combination of peat (or coco coir, if you're avoiding peat for sustainability reasons — more on that below), perlite, and a bit of compost or worm castings for nutrients. That's it. That's the boring, unsexy, extremely effective formula.

Succulents and cacti want a fast-draining, gritty mix — think more sand and perlite, less peat. Regular potting soil holds way too much water for them, and overwatering is the single most common way people accidentally kill a cactus. Yes, even you, the person who "forgets to water everything." A cactus can forgive drought. It cannot forgive a swamp.
Tropical foliage plants
Tropical foliage plants (pothos, monstera, philodendron, the whole Instagram crew) want a mix that holds a bit more moisture but still drains well — a standard peat-or-coir-based indoor mix with perlite usually does the job.
Orchids
Orchids don't even want "soil" in the traditional sense. They want chunky bark, sphagnum moss, and lots of air around their roots, because in the wild, most orchids aren't growing in dirt at all — they're growing on trees. Pot an orchid in regular potting mix and you're basically drowning it in slow motion.
African violets and other fine-rooted plants
African violets and other fine-rooted plants prefer a lighter, fluffier mix, often with extra vermiculite, since their delicate roots can't push through anything dense.
The point is: "one bag for every plant" is the plant-care equivalent of using the same shoes for a marathon and a beach day. Technically possible. Not recommended.
Reading the Bag Like You Actually Mean It
Most bags will tell you what's in them if you flip them over and read past the marketing copy. A few things worth checking:
- pH level: Most houseplants are happy in slightly acidic to neutral soil (roughly 6.0–7.0). Blueberries and a handful of specialty plants want more acidic conditions, but for your average houseplant, neutral-ish is fine.
- Added fertilizer: Some mixes come pre-loaded with slow-release fertilizer. Good to know, because it changes how soon you'll need to start feeding.
- Peat vs. coco coir: Peat has been the industry standard forever, but it's not a renewable resource on any human timescale, and a lot of growers (myself included, these days) have shifted to coco coir, which performs similarly and is a byproduct of coconut processing rather than a mined bog.
The Signs You Chose Wrong (Because Your Plant Will Absolutely Tell You)
Plants are not subtle about soil problems, even if we're slow to read the signs:
- Water sits on top and takes forever to soak in: Soil is too compacted, not enough drainage material.
- Soil dries out within a day: Not enough moisture-retentive material, or the pot is too small for the mix.
- Yellowing leaves plus soggy soil: Root rot risk, usually from soil holding too much water for that particular plant.
- Soil smells sour or swampy: Anaerobic conditions, meaning water has been sitting stagnant far too long. Repot, and soon.
